Description

The Society of Building Science Educators (SBSE) is pleased to announce it will provide up to eight scholarships (valued at $225 each) to qualified students to help defray the cost of attending the 2006 Summer Retreat. Each scholarship will allay most of the on-site retreat costs including lodging, meals, and shuttle transportation to/from the Denver airport. Scholarship students pay SBSE Student Membership Dues ($15) and are responsible for their travel expenses.

These scholarships are intended to provide support for students with an interest in teaching environmental control systems (or a closely related building science). The scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis following review of all applications received prior to the application deadline of 5:00pm CST, Monday, April 17, 2006. To be eligible for a scholarship an applicant must be a graduate student with experience prior to the summer retreat as a teaching assistant in an environmental control systems (building science) course or participation in an Agents of Change Training Session. Preference will be given to applicants who are clearly interested in pursuing a teaching career in building sciences, who are close to graduation, and who have never attended a summer retreat. The selection process will favor geographic diversity and balanced representation from institutions, assuming all other criteria have been met.

The intent of this scholarship program is to provide critical support for currently enrolled students with limited (or no) institutional resources at their disposal. The program is not targeted at faculty currently holding tenure-track positions. Interested students are encouraged to seek additional support from their home institutions (department, college and/or university) to help defray travel expenses.

How to Apply

Applications may be submitted by surface mail, fax, or e-mail (preferred). They should address the following issues (which constitute the selection criteria established for the scholarship). Please submit 1 page only!

1. Contact information: name of the applicant, institution, address, telephone number, and e-mail address.

2. Educational background: current and prior institutions and programs, specific course work in environmental control systems (building science), and relevant learning experience through practice (if applicable).

3. Summary of teaching experiences: as a teaching assistant in environmental control systems (building science) – briefly describe the scope of your experience, your roles, and their context.

4. Personal statement: briefly describe your interest in teaching building sciences, why you are interested, when you hope to begin teaching, your anticipated teaching role, and the benefits you expect to derive through participation in the SBSE Summer Retreat.

Scholarship recipients will be notified by April 21, 2005, after which they must register for the retreat on or before April 24, 2006.

Please submit one-page applications before 5:00pm CST, Monday, April 17, 2006 to:
